Personal grooming means being presentable to others, paying attention to body hygiene, personal cleanliness, groomed nails, hair, absence of body odour and dressing well. By paying a little more attention to how one dresses at work one could substantially influence one’s career path. Wearing the right kind of clothes for the right occasion to appeal to the sensibility of the audience is very important. Has anyone given a thought as to why politicians do not wear business suits when addressing rallies or why one does not wear kurta-pyjama at a formal business presentation, because, one has to live up to an environment and make a statement about the image of the industry that one represents. By paying attention to dressing, one will be able to project an image of a sophisticated, successful working individual that one is or aspires to be. The key to dress correctly for the corporate world is not really about following fashion trends but knowing what is right in corporate dressing. The most important thing is to follow the dress code that is being followed at the work place. Wearing jeans and T-shirt in a formal setting will make a person a misfit and vice versa wearing a business suit in a casual office setting will also not do. It is best to try and always wear something that fits well on one’s body structure and gives a serious look. Whether one is applying for their first job or getting a promotion at the office, it is best to wear a formal business suit or baju kebangsaan (Malaysian National costume) for women to showcase one’s corporate look. Basically one is communicating to the future employer that one will fit into the office.Types of fabrics, the choice of colour for ties do make a personal statement about refinement and good taste.
There are some basic rules to conform for ensuring personal grooming. A daily bath is a necessity to eliminate body odour. A hairstyle to suit one’s face and style should be chosen. Do remember that ears, nose and eyes should always be cleaned in private. Teeth should be shining clean, mouth free from bad breath and nails well clipped and clean. Women can wear nail polish and keep moderately long nails. Toes and feet for women should be crack free if exposed. Men should wear closed shoes in business environments.
